On This Day in Rock and Roll History – May 23, 1963 Paul Revere & The Raiders inked a deal with Columbia Records, launching a streak of hits that would see them become one of the most iconic American rock bands of the 1960s. Between 1965 and 1971, they racked up fourteen Billboard Top 40 singles, combining a garage rock edge with Revolutionary War-inspired outfits and a rebellious sense of fun. Fast forward to 1971, and the band reached a new level of success with a powerful and poignant track:

#OnThisDay (1890): Sioux leader Sitting Bull is killed by Indian police agents in the early morning hours on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation. Two weeks later, agents opened fire on Sioux tribe members partaking in the Ghost Dance at Wounded Knee.
