This is a male Atlas moth. They can have a wingspan of a foot (wingtip to wingtip). The females will emerge from their cocoon and attract a mate using pheromones. Males will track down a waiting female using their feather-like antenna as amazing and selective radar. They will mate and the female will then fly off to lay over 100 eggs on various trees in tropical Asia, where it is from. Atlas moth (Attacus atlas). Atlas moths are considered one of the largest moths in the world, with a wingspan of around 25 - 30 cm. In India, Atlas moths are cultivated for their silk in a non-commercial capacity; unlike that produced by the related silkworm moth (Bombyx mori), Atlas moth silk is secreted as broken strands.
