U.S. President Donald Trump has interrupted his talks in Washington with European leaders to call Russian President Vladimir Putin, an EU diplomat told Reuters on Monday.

The European Commission says it presumes the United States will impose a 15% tariff on most EU exports from Friday.

The EU’s exports to the U.S. declined in June and hit their lowest level since the end of 2023, according to statistics agency Eurostat.

President Donald Trump announced a trade deal with the European Union on Sunday after EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said it took "heavy lifting."

On July 27, Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission and President Trump agreed to a deal that included a 15% tariff on most goods from the EU.

The talks are due to resume after the call, which Trump had initially said would take place after he consulted with European leaders, added the diplomat

Back in 2020, the European Parliament published a briefing paper which set out “growing concern that the citizens, businesses and Member States of the European Union (EU) are gradually losing control over their data, over their capacity for innovation, and over their ability to shape and enforce legislation in the digital environment.”

Jolted by President Trump’s support for possible land swaps in Ukraine, they went to back President Volodymyr Zelensky, a move that appeared to have accomplished its goal.
