A Texas Democrat slept in the House chamber overnight after rejecting an around-the-clock police escort tasked with ensuring she showed up to work.
Several Texas state House Democrats ripped up the written agreements that allowed them to leave the chamber with a police escort and returned to the House floor Tuesday night, the caucus announced.
The "Fight the Trump Takeover" rallies will take place this weekend. In Austin, the protest will take place at the Texas State Capitol from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and will be attended by Austin Reps. Greg Casar and Lloyd Doggett, Beto O'Rourke and renowned civil rights and labor leader Dolores Huerta ., according to the official event page.
Texas House Democrat Nicole Collier spent the night at the state's Capitol, which she live streamed, after refusing to sign a pledge that she would return for a vote on redistricting. Her protest came after House Speaker Dustin Burrows announced that the Texas Democrats would not be allowed to leave the chambers until they signed a document promising to show up the following morning and that they would be forced to have police escorts back and forth.
Protesters were evacuated from Texas State Capitol grounds after a possible threat reported closed Capitol grounds Tuesday evening, the Texas Department of Public Safety said.
