Donald Trump has told Ukraine to give up hopes of getting back annexed Crimea or joining NATO as he prepares to host President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders in Washington on Monday to press Kyiv into accepting a peace deal with Russia.

U.S. President Donald Trump could offer NATO-like protection of Ukraine, and Russia is open to the idea, one of his top foreign policy officials said on Sunday ahead of a meeting with Ukraine and European leaders to hammer out details of possible security guarantees for Kyiv.

European leaders will join Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for his crucial meeting with President Trump in Washington on Monday.
