SANTIAGO, Chile — What was intended as a fundraising mission for cancer research has become a nightmare for American teen influencer Ethan Guo, who has been stuck since June in a remote location in Chilean territory in Antarctica .

As Mr Guo began to lose airspeed, he set course for Antarctica — what he said was the closest place to land without traversing the worst of airspace above mountain ranges. Now hundreds of kilometres off course, Mr Guo landed at Teniente Rodolfo Marsh Martin Airport on King George Island, a Chilean territory in Antarctica.

An American teen influencer whose ambitious solo flight around the world ground to a halt two months ago when he landed in Antarctica has struck a deal with Chilean authorities so he can finally leave the continent, according to reports.

Guo's attorney said the pilot received "explicit, direct permission" to land at a Chilean base. But upon landing, Guo was arrested and charged with providing false flight information, according to Chilean officials, who said he did not have a permit and "violated international regulations regarding the Antarctica continent."

Ethan Guo, a content creator, said that he has been effectively trapped at a Chilean base since June. The authorities had said he landed there without permission.
