The Education Department announced Tuesday it was offloading six of its biggest grant programs to other parts of the executive branch — a major step in the Trump administration’s plan to close the sprawling agency.

The state has only met its own deadline in 12.6% of cases since 2019, prompting lawmakers to demand accountability in a Senate hearing this week.

"I can actually live my life and hopefully retire before I'm 90," said Tammy Stinson, who got student-loan forgiveness after 25 years of payments.

The vast majority of staff in Department of Education’s Office of Impact Aid were fired as part of the department’s recent reduction in force creating uncertainty around when funding will be released to districts.
