After weeks of delays, Texas Republicans who control the state House are slated to begin the process for their controversial redistricting plan.

After Democrats returned to the Texas statehouse, Republican leadership assigned law enforcement officers to monitor them to prevent further delays to their plan to redraw congressional voting districts to favor Republicans ahead of the election.

Texas Republicans could pass critical legislation Wednesday giving them an advantage in next year’s midterms. Right now, Democrats and Republicans are debating a bill allowing the GOP to carve out districts likely to give them five extra congressional seats.

Democrats said Republicans in the Texas House crossed a line by detaining them en masse and then assigning state troopers to trail them everywhere they go.

Democratic Texas state Rep. Nicole Collier spent the night on the Texas House floor in protest after refusing a Republican demand to be placed under the watch of the state Department of Public Safety.

California Republican leaders are fighting back against a proposal that Democrats released last week to redraw congressional district boundaries.
