Ron Turcotte, the jockey who rode Secretariat during his Triple Crown year in 1973 and electrified the sport, died Friday at his home in Canada. He was 84.

Hall of Fame jockey Ron Turcotte, who rode Secretariat to the Triple Crown in 1973, has died. He was 84. Turcotte’s family said through his longtime business partner and friend Leonard Lusky that the Canada-born jockey died of natural causes Friday at his home in Drummond, New Brunswick.

Turcotte famously rode Secretariat to the Triple Crown in 1973, sweeping the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes to end a 25-year drought for the feat. It marked the first Triple Crown victory since Citation's run in 1948.
