But the adapter does not have to understand GPT, or MBR for that matter. The adapter doesn't get involved with partition structure at all. It just reads and writes blocks across the entire disk.

Also, Win XP doesn't like accessing GPT protected partitions, so you won't be able to see the data. A win7 computer should see the data on it just fine..
