The European Union must be united and coordinate closely in view of Donald Trump's coming return to the White House, the leaders of the bloc's two main powers, Germany and France, said on Wednesday after holding talks to coordinate their response.

European officials believe U.S. priorities lie elsewhere, no matter who wins. The Middle East is top of President Joe Biden’s list right now, but the long-term priority is China.

Prime Minister Petr Fiala also congratulated Trump for winning the presidential election. “Our shared goal is to ensure that the relations between our countries remain at the highest level, despite changes in administration, and that we continue to develop them for the benefit of our citizens,” Fiala posted on X.

Israel and Ukraine’s leaders were among the first to congratulate Trump, even before most outlets had called his victory.

According to a spokesperson for the French government, President Emmanuel Macron has proposed a plan for the 27 member states of the European Union to coordinate their strategy on how to strengthen Europe in response to Donald Trump's victory in the presidential elections in the United States.
